Juan Gastélum sculptor & painter
I'm a mexican artist.
Statement: As a thinker, I believe that we artists are the part of humanity that expresses what society feels, we empathize with a certain sector or individuals, and then create or interpret. And maybe using the term ¨creator¨ is a bit out of place, instead the term ¨composer¨ seems more coherent with reality, because we are not really creating anything at all, just using the same elements that nature already has, and reordering them in new languages, anyhow, as any mathematician or chemistry scientist knows, these new combinations of already known elements or group of elements, have a totally new identity, paradoxically, this observation puts the term ¨creator¨ back into real sense. :D Creators or composers, the terms are only tags, the reality are the actions, the diffusion of human feelings, its complexities, its passions, its shadows and lights, our connections to our own inner self are the same connections to life. I truly believe that a great philosopher should also have the ability to express in simple terms, to live in practical actions, beauty in its complexity is displayed with elegance, which always seems that way: simple. As an artist, I want to be able to follow beauty, to be able to continue the experience of it, and to be able to share it to the world, that is why I love very much the bronze sculpture, because it is a time lasting statement that is simply worth the effort of materializing it, experience, and possess. Regarding the painting, I am sure that it is a very tricky discipline, it interprets in two dimensions as a code, a lot more that only three dimensions, I am sure that many other dimensions are well codified in a canvas, many feelings, thoughts and experiences live and wait patiently, irradiating a message, waiting for the spectator in order to get expanded and travel through the human heart.
